Personal Sacrifice: Balancing Social Life, Day Jobs, and DJing
Hey everyone, it’s DJ Shilpi here. Today, I want to talk about something we all face, no matter what we’re passionate about – balance. Balancing your social life, day job, and a dream like DJing is like walking a tightrope. It’s a dance of give and take, and I’ve been there, so let’s talk about it.
Imagine you’re holding three balls – one for friends and family, one for your day job, and one for DJing. Keeping all these balls in the air can be tough. There will be times when your social life calls for you, but you’ve got a gig or need to practice. Or your day job demands more of you just when you’ve started to get into the groove with your music.
DJing isn’t a typical 9-to-5 job; it’s a passion that often takes place in the evenings or on weekends, times when most people are relaxing or catching up with friends. So, yes, sacrifices are made. Sometimes, you have to miss out on gatherings or events because you’re booked to play. It’s hard, but it’s part of the journey.
The key to this balancing act is setting priorities. What comes first today might not be the same tomorrow. Maybe you decide to dedicate a couple of nights a week to practice and the rest to family and friends. Or perhaps your weekends are for gigs, and weekdays are for your day job and a bit of rest.
Communication is your best friend. Be open with your loved ones about your DJing dreams. More often than not, they’ll support you. They might even pop into your shows to cheer you on! And when it comes to work, be smart about your schedule. Use your free time wisely, and if DJing is your side hustle, make sure it doesn’t affect your main job.
There’s also the emotional tug-of-war. You’ll feel guilty at times, maybe for missing out on a family dinner or not being there for a friend’s birthday. Remember, it’s okay to say no sometimes, to gigs or to social events. Your well-being comes first, and stretching yourself too thin helps no one.
But let me tell you, when you’re behind those decks, and the crowd is feeling every beat, every drop, every melody – that’s when you know all the sacrifices are worth it. That’s when you realize that you’re not just playing music, you’re creating experiences and memories for others and yourself.
So, to all my fellow dreamers out there trying to make it as DJs, remember that balance isn’t about giving equal time to everything. It’s about giving the right time to the right things at the right moments. It’s about being present, whether you’re at a family dinner, at your day job, or in the DJ booth.
It’s a tough ride, for sure. But if you love it, truly love it, you’ll find your rhythm. And trust me, when you do, every sacrifice feels less like a loss and more like a step towards something beautiful.
Keep spinning, keep loving, and keep balancing.
With heart,
DJ Shilpi
